it's good to see you again.

@ Indiepublic as fuck

meanwhile, i'm so sorry that you lack the skills to carry this magazine, but oh, well. at least you have enough skill at making friends to find those who will sympathize with you, and share your passions...that's how the coalitions and movements that REALLY change things -- rather than the cultural impotencies that pop up and feign intellect for a few weeks...before they get slid into encylopedias and 'where are they now.' --  you, me, sustainability -- all THREE of us deserve better.  and you know that Mother Earth discerns, and evolves -- but judge or discriminate?  no, she doesn't do such things.

EPA Air Quality rule on coal plants delayed
A U.S. federal appeals court on Friday issued a last-minute order to delay the January 1 implementation of stricter federal limits on pollution from coal-fired plants, providing a temporary win for utilities worried about the cost of implementation. In a blow to environmental groups, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit granted a request to stay the Environmental Protection Agency's Cross-State Air Pollution Rule, pending further court review. The EPA finalized the rule in July, setting much stricter limits on sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from power plants in 27 states to protect the health of residents in states downwind from the emissions. "The EPA firmly believes that when the court does weigh the merits of the rule it will ultimately be upheld," the agency said in a statement after the court's decision.

Math and Piegons
There is a common saying that being a bird brain means you are not very bright. But how bright is that? Pigeons can learn abstract numerical rules, a skill that scientists had believed only primates possessed. Although the birds may not be able to do higher math, their ability to reason numerically is likely something that a wide variety of species can do, too, researchers say. Many species, from honeybees to elephants, can discriminate between quantities of items, sounds, or smells, and represent numbers mentally. However only primates (all species, from lemurs to chimpanzees) were known previously to be able to reason numerically.

It was a bad year for Rhinos as Asian demand for Rhino horn drives record slaughter in Africa
A record number of rhinos were poached this year in South Africa, home to the greatest number of the animals, as rising demand in Asia for their horns led to increased killings of the threatened species. At least 443 rhinos have been killed in South Africa in 2011, up from 333 last year, the national park service and conservationists said. The street value of rhinoceros horns has soared to about $65,000 a kilogram, making it more expensive than gold, platinum and in many cases cocaine, as a belief - with no basis in science - has taken hold in recent years in parts of Asia that ingesting it can cure or prevent cancer. South Africa, home to more than 20,000 rhinos, was losing about 15 animals a year a decade ago. But poaching increased dramatically from about 2007 as a growing affluent class in places such as Vietnam and Thailand began spending more on rhino horn for traditional medicine.

NATURE

Dear Envy Friends,I recently received a book from a dear friend who works up in the Italian Alps as a lumberjack. The book's title is "Nature", by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and it was written in 1836. I am pretty sure every person living in America knows or at least heard about this writer, thinker and philosopher who, for some reasons, I link to Thoreau.Anyways,…See More
