Got Skin? You Need this Book! Simple Skin Beauty: Every Woman’s Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy, Gorgeous Skin

I’m a beauty junkie. Readers of this blog already know that and, while it’s embarrassing to admit my obsession with cosmetics, perfumes, potions and lotions, I know I’m not alone. The global beauty industry accounted for roughly $160 billion per year in 2003, according to an article in The Economist.

We all know beauty junkies. (Or perhaps you are one?) You can tell us from our up-to-the-second nail color and our oversized handbags that carry “essential” beauty products that we wouldn’t be caught leaving home without. Our wallets are full of credit cards from beauty stores and we’re often on a first name basis with the UPS man – the one who brings us the latest breakthrough products that we ordered online.

Well, now that we’ve been defined, I must tell you about my newest beauty obsession …

I recently received a review copy of Dr. Ellen Marmur’s book, Simple Skin Beauty: Every Woman’s Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy, Gorgeous Skin. This book is a beauty junkie’s best fix. There is not a page that isn’t filled with the sort of information that makes a beauty junkie’s skin tingle with delight. Dr. Marmur, an internationally-renowned, board-certified dermatologist is Chief of Dermatologic and Cosmetic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. She calls upon her medical background and clinical experience to present skin care facts and tips in an authoritative but concise and palatable manner that will benefit beauty junkies of all ages.  The book covers everything from sunscreen to Botox injections to cosmetic treatments such as microdermabrasion and surgery.

Dr. Marmur explains that we don’t have one skin type. Skin is dynamic, constantly changing and we have to address those changes by adjusting our skincare regimen accordingly.  Dr. Marmur tells readers that what we eat strongly affects our skin’s appearance. In other words, the book is not limited to a discussion about lotions and potions. Dr. Marmur writes informatively about skin cancer and tackles the subject of aging skin and how to keep it looking as youthful as possible. (Dr Marmur has been chosen to receive a Presidential Citation.This is in recognition of her work with the media to positively position the specialty of dermatology and educate the public about the importance of skin cancer detection and prevention.)

Simple Skin Beauty, published by Simon and Schuster, is an informative resource that, I think, should be on every woman’s bookshelf.  It’s not just for beauty junkies. It’s for everyone who, well, who has skin and wants to keep it healthy and beautiful.
